How can you use animation?
Animation is both a way to implement media studies in teaching and a teaching tool that can be used to work with subjects and topics in a new way.
When students work on a animation production, there are two learning aspects: First, they learn about film as a media, and secondly they learn about the topic they are discussing in the films.
Media literacy is a critical competence for children and young people today. Through the practical work with their own productions, students get an understanding of film language that enhances their analytical approach to media and increases their desire to be active and creative media users in general.
Film media easily arouse children's curiosity and motivates their learning ability. At the same time the animation work process develop the abilities of planning and reconciling different learning styles. It gives particular new opportunities to reach the group of children and young people who are not as academically strong, and it creates a new approach to particular subjects such as Science.
Targeted projects with animation in teaching shows that the animation work process is especially effective in language and literacy development. When students in animation production are going to put pictures on concepts and events it strengthens their language comprehension and expression. Moreover, the time-consuming production process calls on to cut to the bone in the narrative, which gives a good understanding of narrative structure. Technically it is simple to produce animation, as there is free software online that can quite easily be combined with a webcam.
