The Travelling Workshop visits China

In cooperation with the Chinese environmental movement Friends of Nature (FON), The Animation Workshop has arranged workshops for Chinese children and teachers. Animation is utilised as a dissemination tool to present various topics and issues on a pedagogical, artistic and subtle manner. The project comprised the teaching of 100 children as well as educational training and competency development of 15 teachers from Beijing Broadcasting Institute (BBI) and Friends of Nature, in the use of animation with children.

Purpose
The objective of the project is to create awareness on environmental protection through the use of animation. Furthermore, the project should:
• inspire youngsters and teachers to utilise animation as an artistic expression and a dissemination tool
• develop the skill set of local instructors to use equipment, pedagogical and didactical approaches to ensure a sustainable future work with animation as a dissemination tool
• reinvigorate the creative and pedagogical dissemination methods across different cultures
• introduce the utilisation of the computer as children are fascinated by – which combines the art, play and learning
• the organisation of the workshop will lead to mutual inspiration and knowledge sharing between The Animation Workshop and Beijing Broadcasting Institute
• portray Chinese children’s view on environment through animation
• participants must produce animated films that will be shown for Danish children and be part of a hiking exhibition with pictures from the performance of the project
• create awareness of the use of animation with children in China

The project
The focus of the project is very much on children as participants since animation in connection with teaching of children never before has been used in China. The children who participated in the workshops were given assignments from Friends of Nature to develop their own stories; i.e. create their own manuscripts, draw and cut figures, animate, edit and put audio on their animations - the participants were therefore to produce their own animated films that shed light on issues in connection with the topic.

The topics which Friends of Nature based their assignments on were taken from the children’s everyday life – the rapid expanding city Beijing. They chose to focus on the city’s major water shortages, the proliferation of cars and the large sandstorms that often occur in the spring – all conditions which the children are directly affected by.
