The Travelling Workshop visits the Philippines

The Travelling Workshop was invited to the Philippines by the Stairway Foundation; an organisation that helps street children in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Every year with financial support from various NGOs, the Stairway Foundation seeks to help street children in Manila by providing them with an education.

Project objective

The majority of street children in Manila, the Philippines are either victims of incest or have been sexually assaulted. Incest and sexual abuse are both taboos in the Philippines, which makes it hard for the children to talk about. Thus, they live a life in silence.

The Travelling Workshop conducted three workshops. The objective with these workshops was to help these children "talk" about their traumatic experiences; through animation, the children had to produce animated films and in that way express and tell each of their stories.

What experiences did the children have?

Animation functions as a dissemination tool as well as a means of expression. Through animation, the children were capable of expressing themselves in a different way than talking about their traumatic experiences. Moreover, they had fun working with animation and learning about the animation process by producing their own films.
